For permanent employees, the daily commute is an unavoidable aspect of working life. Generally viewed as unpleasant and dull, this daily activity takes up a considerable portion of your working week. It’s likely that, even when you become a contractor, you may have to commute to assignments. If this is the case then don’t worry, your commute can be made simpler, or even enjoyable, we’ve given you five top tips to achieve this:

When taking the train, order your tickets in advance

Travelling by train is often a faster way of reaching your destination, however advance tickets can offer you big savings compared to buying your tickets on the day. Season tickets are also an option if you are travelling by train for more than seven days in a row, monthly and yearly tickets are available.

Subscribe to a music service

It is worth investing in a quality pair of headphones so you can listen to music on the go. You don’t have to splurge, there are plenty of cheaper options on the market. In terms of a music service, Spotify has a wide range of genres to explore, with more than 30 million songs in its library. There’s something for you!

Read your favourite book

Audiobooks are a great alternative to reading a physical copy of a book. Not only do you save valuable space in your bag, it is much easier to listen to a book on the move. Services such as Amazon Audible are perfect for catching up with your favourite books.

And finally, relaxation is key

It doesn’t matter whether you use public transport or your own means of getting to work, you can use your commute to rest. Taking time to focus on yourself is important, it allows you to recharge and wind down ready for the next day.

Claiming back travel expenses

If you need to travel to and from your assignment, then you can claim tax relief. Travel expenses are any costs associated with business-related activities away from home, it’s worth looking into as you may be entitled to more than you think.
