A fascinating report by recruiter Robert Half shows that 36% of all UK employees will have left their jobs in the first half of 2017. The survey, titled ‘It’s time we all work happily: The secrets of the happiest companies and employees’, was designed to understand the happiness levels of UK employees and brings some very interesting insights.

What’s driving this change?

According to the report, by the end of June, over one-third of UK employees will have changed jobs this year – which clearly shows a huge opportunity for limited company contractors to take up some of those important positions. But why is it happening?

The survey data shows that it’s the millennials (aged 18 to 34) who are leading the charge – with a figure of 48% leaving their current roles so far in 2017. That’s compared to 33% of 35 to 54-year-olds and 21% of those aged 55+. And when looking at the different sectors, technology and IT again lead the field, with 52% of those in this industry stating they were thinking of leaving their current roles during the first half of 2017.

Regional variations

The research found that London-based employees were most likely to be changing jobs, with 49% of those surveyed considering a move – and this is compared with only 32% in the north, which also scored higher on the survey’s ‘happiness scale’. In each of the regions of the UK, the percentage of people who are ‘likely to have left their current jobs’ by the beginning of July (meaning that presumably many have already done so) is as follows:

  • London 49%
  • East of England 42%
  • South 35%
  • Midlands 35%
  • Scotland 33%
  • North 32%
  • Yorkshire and the Humber 27%

Commenting on the survey, senior managing director at Robert Half UK Phil Sheridan said, “With a skills shortage continuing in the UK, skilled employees are fast becoming aware that they have multiple opportunities available to them as demand continues to grow faster than supply.” And from our perspective, of course, we see this high level of staff turnover creating many new opportunities for the contractor workforce.
